Big Benefits Are Seen From Eating Less Salt - NYTimes.com

Big Benefits Are Seen From Eating Less Salt - NYTimes.com
This is a new attempt on my part to post more on my blog by commenting on articles. In this case I wonder if a good sea salt has the same detrimental effects as the salt in processed food. I suspect the problem is as much eating processed food in the first place as it is with the individual components

50 lbs in 5 mo, Jan

My quest is to lose the weight and keep it off through establishing a lifestyle that includes a weekly detox. I intend to reduce my caloric intake by approximately 25% through a combination of weekly fasting and nutrient dense food.

My first detox (related in the intro) was very successful. I started at 230 and on the 4th morning I was 218 lbs. Then came the hard part, establishing a dietary regimen that would keep my weight down until the next detox in approximately 7 days.

I didn't manage very well in 2 respects:
1 I ate too much bread and not enough fruit
2 I put off the second detox and ended it early

2nd detox: start date, Monday Jan 18 (225 lbs); end date, Jan 20 (220 lbs).

I have to overcome bad habits and a failure to plan. I am especially bad at either declining negative food or eating small amounts. In other words, I never seek out macaroni and cheese but when someone offers it I accept and eat too much. Same is true of hot rolls.

One good thing has come of my efforts: Alva has agreed to detox 1 day per week. It always helps to have a detox buddy.

50 lbs in 5 mo, Intro

I intend to get skinny. I'm approaching the age where one either gets old or dies and most of the old people I've observed have been skinny. In addition, most of those I know who make it with their original hips, knees, and teeth are skinny. I therefore will not only lose 50 pounds in the next 5 months, I will lose it through a lifestyle change such that it stays gone.

That is the what and why. the when and where are easy. When is now and where is irrelevant.

The how is simple to explain but it may become complex in the execution: I will fast 2 to 3 days each week until I reach my target. I want the process to take 5 months and will adjust my efforts to keep that (relatively slow) pace. In other words, I believe I could lose 50 pounds in 2 months but not with a sustainable lifestyle. by taking 5 months, I hope to make my lifestyle "normal"--a style of life I can continue for the rest of my life.

A secondary goal is to come up with a detailed Introduction to DetoX. Our current manual is basically the same one that was passed on to us. A straight forward procedure with little theoretical information. We need a philosophy of DetoX. We need to experiment with alternative suggestions for using the product as well as alternative methods of cleansing.

This blog will for the basis for an Introduction to DetoX. Each week I will perform a cleansing experiment using myself as the guinea pig. Each week I will attempt to come closer to an easy to understand explanation of cleansing and its benefits. I hope some of you will follow along and contribute.

My first 2010 DetoX

This is the third day of what I intended to be a 1 day detox. Why the change? I weighed myself and found that I's gained 15 pounds over the course of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the loss of a loved one on Christmas Day.

My goal had been to lose 50 pounds over the first five months of 2010 but now I have to up it to 65 pounds--13 per month instead of 10. My goal is to weigh 165 by my birthday. That is about what I weighed when I was in the best shape of my life. I previously achieved that weight through vigorous exercise, now I will do it with moderate exercise and eating a lot less.

My weights thus far have been as follows

Day 1: 230, 230
Day 2: 226, 227
Day 3: 224, 222

I weigh myself before drinking DetoX the two times each day. The loss of eight pounds in 3 days is remarkable but I've been stuffing myself for the past two weeks.

Tomorrow I'm going to decide whether to continue. My dilemma is I had planned to do regular short fasts to test my ability to restrict my eating in-between fasts. Right now however, I feel so good that I hate to stop.
